Following graduation and a period of research and consultancy in the leisure field was:
Director of Sport Development, Scottish Sports Council until 1988.
Director of National Services with the Sports Council in the UK until 1994.
Chief Executive of the Sports Council in the UK and of Sport England until 2001 responsible for national development programmes on community sports development, facilities planning, design, development and management and on high performance sport.
During the period 1994-2001 responsible for the establishment of the Sports Lottery Fund in the UK, the development of the English Institute for Sport and the funding of sports facilities from local to national level.
Responsible for the development of the World Class Support Programmes for English and British sportsmen and women including personalized funding and support in the fields of sports medicine, science and coaching.
